Holiday homes aren't just for travels, it's also perfect for sharing with family and remote work

"During the pandemic, we've come to appreciate that we don’t really need to be at the office to do our jobs and could just as easily do them from any of the August Collection homes. So we look forward to spending more time in Europe but could not possibly take on the responsibilities that would come with owning more properties – especially ones so far away. "

Some of the perks of owning second homes are the freedom to come and go as you please, to do what you want, whenever you want. Many families are discovering the possibilities of remote working, where the days where you had to commute to a workplace is now a thing of the past. The desire to have the option of multiple places to live and work is a great appeal, not to mention another perk that is the actual holidays and getting to know new places.

Places where you can pop out to the garden to enjoy a cup of tea in between Zoom calls, emails and preparing meals is what a lot of families are starting to consider. So as existing second homeowners, this family was more than pleased to discover that they could own with August more holiday homes in new destinations without the responsibilities of ownership.

Discover why August makes sense for this hiking-loving Canadian family

Welcome to the August community, we can't wait for you to experience your homes. Can you please tell us a little bit about you and your family?

We have been happily married for almost 30 years and have two children in their early 20s. The younger one is still at university while the older one has finished and started working. During the pandemic, we have come to appreciate that we don’t really need to be at the office to do our jobs and could just as easily do them from any of the August Collection homes.

Have you considered buying a holiday home?

We do own a holiday home in Canada, and it has taught us how much work is involved in maintaining both the house and the garden. We look forward to spending more time in Europe but could not possibly take on the responsibilities that would come with a third property – especially one so far away. In addition to the responsibilities of owning another home, it just doesn’t make financial sense if we are only going to use the property for 8 to at most 12 weeks per year and leave it empty the rest of the time.

What is most important to you when you go on holidays?

We enjoy returning to places that we like, to really get to know them. Whilst hotels are great for a few nights, for longer stays we much prefer having access to a kitchen so we can cook some of our own meals.

Which August properties are you most excited about?

All of them… having a variety of options is great. The mix of locations works well for different seasons, especially compared to owning a single European home in one place. We like that the properties have enough bedrooms for us to bring our grown children – and even friends – with us on vacation. We will probably not be using the homes in June, July and August when we like to be at our vacation home in Canada and need to tend to our vegetable garden.

What is your favourite item to pack when going on holidays?

Our hiking boots!
